Pegasus Bay

Pegasus Bay is one of North Canterburys more important wine estates. Wine has been made here since the mid nineteen eighties and it is still owned and managed by the Donaldson family.

The estate is well worthy of a visit. There are gardens and a restaurant on site.

Pegasus Bay Sauvignon Semillon 2015

Aromas of citrus, pear, gooseberry with just a hint of honey. Lovely texture on the palate with a delicate freshness. The use of 30% semillon gives body and a touch of character.

Pegasus Bay Chardonnay 2016

Nose of stone fruit/peach, banana,citrus and a striking minerality. Palate is rich and nicely balanced. lemon and tropical fruits with a lovely lingering finish.

Pegasus Bay Pinot Noir 2014

Ripe cherries and red fruits abound with an earthy/smokey backbone. The palate is rounded, medium bodied and there is a nice finish of red fruits.

Pegasus Bay Merlot Cabernet 2016

Red/purple in colour and deep. Aromas of black fruits, plum, tobacco. Palate has rich ripe fruit, eucalyptus, chocolate and plum. Tannins give a good supporting structure.

Pegasus Bay Bel Canto Dry Riesling 2015 (7g/l residual sugar)

Lemon/lime in colour. Nose is tropical fruit and limes. Palate has lovely balance and is slightly off dry to taste.

Pegasus Bay Riesling 2015 (24g/l)

Limes and sherbet with stone fruits. Off dry and with perfect balance. This is Avery nice wine indeed.

Pegasus Bay Aria Late Harvest Riesling 2014 (84g/l)

Yellow gold with a touch of lime green in appearance. Aromas of citrus, honey, butterscotch and stone fruits. Full, rich and creamy with great balance. A long finish of honey, orange and lime at the very end.

Pegasus Bay Encore Riesling 2016 (176g/l)

Yellow gold in appearance. The palate is fresher with limes and sweet tropical fruits. The palate has elegance and superb balance with the acidity a perfect foil for the sweet fruit. Rich and opulent with a great finish of oranges and honey,

Pegasus Bay Finale Sauvignon Blanc 2014 (180g/l)

Only made in exceptional years. Golden in appearance. This is an exceptionally unctuous wine with intense flavours of orange marmalade, honey and caramel. A wine to savour and enjoy.

Pegasus Bay Gewurtztraminer 2016

lime green/yellow in appearance. Nose is less floral than some but there is tropical fruit a plenty. Palate is rose water/Turkish delight, spice with tropical fruit and some floral notes.

Pegasus Bay Muscat 2016

Nose of apricot, floral and peaches. Palate has good acidity balancing the rich fruit. This is a very quaffable wine for a summers day.

Pegasus Bay Fortissimo Fortified Muscat 2016

Made for the first time in 2016 and with very small production. Nose is delicate and light with floral perfume and tropical fruits. Palate has lovely texture and great acidity to balance the fruit.

Rippon Vineyards

If there were an award for most beautiful vineyard location in the world Rippon would be right up there with the contenders. Situated on the shores of Lake Wanaka, the views from the tasting room over the lake are simply stunning.

The land has been in the hands of the Mills family for over one hundred years but serious grape growing only began in 1982 with wines first sold commercially in 1989. There has always been a strong commitment to organic farming practices and Rippon has been operationally biodynamic since 2002 and received certification in 2016.

THE WINES

Rippon Osteiner 2017. A cross between Riesling and Sylvaner, Osteiner is a wine that comes in at a relatively low, by todays standards, 10.8% alcohol. This makes it an ideal wine for quaffing on a sunny afternoon. Crisp and dry with aromas of apricot and a nice texture. A very drinkable wine. The only wine sold under screwscrewcapcap.

Rippon Sauvignon Blanc 2016. Aromas of lime and gooseberry, this wine has a flinty minerality. The use of neutral oak for fermentation of 40% of the grapes has produced a Sauvignon with good texture. Well balanced with a nice limey finish.

Rippon “Rippon” Mature Vine Pinot Noir 2013. This wine has spent two years in barrel and one in bottle before release. Nose is dark cherry, raspberry, strawberry and a hint of coffee. Palate is lovely cherry fruit with a nice savoury finish.

Rippon “Rippon” Mature Vine Riesling 2016. Fermented with stainless steel tank on its side to give greater contact and has spent 100 days on lees. Lemon and lime citrus, slightly floral. Nice weight, well balance and really nice finish.

Rippon Gewurztraminer 2017. Nose is floral, citrus, pear. This is a well made wine that is food friendly and has a long finish of pears with a small touch of honey. Well balanced

Hawkes Bay Wine Region Part 1

Hawkes Bay is situated on the east coast of New Zealand’s north island. It is the oldest and second largest of the wine growing regions in the country. Grape vines were first planted here as long ago as 1851. The climate in the region is well suited to grape growing; low rainfall, 2220 hours of sunshine annually on average, long growing conditions and cooling onshore breezes.

Vineyards are found around the cities of Napier and Hastings. these are also both interesting places to visit. The Hawkes Bay region was devastated by an earthquake in 1931 and the subsequent rebuilding meant that many buildings, especially in Napier, were built in the Art Deco style. Napier is now known as the Art Deco capital of the world!

There are three main clusters of wineries in the area that make planning visits carefully as the distances between them can be large. From the Napier vineyards to those around Bridge Pa/Gimblett Gravels near Hastings for example is a 18Km (11 mile) drive. Church Road Grand Reserve Chardonnay. 2016

Tropical fruits, nutty, marzipan flavour abound in this complex wine which has lovely balance. the finish is long and Lingering. Excellent.

Church Road. Classic Range Merlot/Cabernet Sauvignon. 2016

Red fruit and plum flavours with some savoury and spicy notes. Medium bodied. A good everyday wine to have with food.

Church Road McDonald Series Merlot 2015

Good depth of colour to the wine. Dark berry fruits, plums. The palate is rich and full with warm spice, vanilla and a nice savoury finish.

Church Road Grand Reserve. Cabernet Sauvignon/Merlot 2014

Great colour, red and black fruits, plums. Soft, round, hints of spice. Tannins integrating. Well balanced. Very nice wine

Church Road Grand Reserve. Cabernet Sauvignon/Merlot 2013

Black fruits , plums abound in this very inviting wine. There is a touch of star anise to add a warming spice. Powerful with great depth and structure and a dry, spicy finish. Excellent.

2. Te Mata

Te Mata Cape Crest Sauvignon Blanc 2016

Very pale with feint lime tinge, with aromas of gooseberry and some tropical notes. Use of some oak gives a nice weight and depth. Nice finish

Te Mata Estate Chardonnay 2016

Peaches and lemon citrus in this very drinkable wine. A lighter style of chardonnay which is crisp and dry.

Te Mata Elston Chardonnay 2016

Single vineyard wine with 40 year old vines. Pale lemon, clear and bright. Lemon citrus, peach, toasty, vanilla give an intense flavour profile but without overpowering. Has nice weight and a long lingering finish. Excellent.

Te Mata Estate Gamay Noir 2017

Light cherry red. Aromas of cherry, strawberry, fruit chews, bubblegum. Light on the palate, fruity, easy drinking style of wine.  This is s fun wine to be enjoyed now.

Te Mata Estate Vineyards Merlot/Cabernet Sauvignon 2016

Youthful in appearance this wine is full of black fruit and plums with a little spice. Palate has nice balance with tannins to soften a little. A wine for drinking with food.

Te Mata Awatea Cabernet Sauvignon/Merlot 2016

Youthful appearance with a great depth of colour. Aromas of black fruits, violets and a warm savoury/herby complexity. Palate is delightful and complex and there is a long savoury finish. Excellent.
